Maralinga

Maralinga is a place in the desert of South Australia which was used by the British and Australians to test nuclear war weapons between 1952 and 1963. Although Britain and Australia also tested nuclear weapons on the Monte Bello islands and at Emu Field, Maralinga became the official testing site after a British requested in 1954. The site was officially closed in 1967. At that time, the Australian government was not concerned about radioactivity or poisonous substances that could have been left behind after the tests. Some of the bi-products can last for 250,000 years. By the 1980’s the effects were becoming obvious. Servicemen and Aboriginals exposed to radioactive fallout from the tests were developing sores, cancers and blindness. The Australian government fenced off the testing grounds and has started cleaning the contaminated land.
